The Origin & Performance of Merino Wool

Originating in Spain during the Middle Ages, the Merino sheep was selectively bred to produce a fleece so exceptionally fine that exported animals were once guarded as high-value assets. To survive in harsh, highly variable environments—ranging from blistering summer heat to freezing, high-altitude mountain winters—these sheep evolved a specialized coat designed for extreme thermal resilience. This volatile climate directly shaped a unique double-layered fleece: a soft, crimped undercoat that traps microscopic air pockets alongside a breathable outer layer that actively manages moisture. Consequently, nature engineered a fiber suitable for all weather conditions. In terms of performance, Merino wool acts as a natural thermoregulator, offering lightweight warmth when cold while remaining extraordinarily cool, soft, and breathable when warm. Beyond its all-climate versatility, the fiber is naturally odor-resistant due to lanolin content, wicks moisture away from the skin without feeling damp, and boasts superior elasticity and strength, making it an elite high-performance material for next-to-skin garments.

Merino wool is shorn annually from Merino sheep, yielding a fleece characterized by its fine, dense, and heavily crimped white locks that naturally repel dirt and moisture. To convert this raw fleece into yarn, it undergoes a meticulous process of scouring to remove grease and debris, carding (and often combing) to align the individual fibers, and finally drafting and twisting on a spinning frame to create a cohesive strand. What makes this fleece and its processing so exceptional is the extreme elasticity and micro-fine scale structure of the individual fibers—which typically measure under 24 microns—allowing them to bend effortlessly rather than prickle the skin. During the spinning process, this natural crimp creates millions of microscopic air pockets that trap heat, producing an exceptionally light, warm, and buttery-soft yarn that offers unparalleled drape, breathability, and skin-contact comfort for high-end knitwear. Because Merino fibers possess a significantly smoother scale structure than coarser breeds, the wool naturally responds with exceptional speed to the superwash process, allowing the scales to be easily smoothed or coated so the finished yarn won't felt in the wash.

A farm to yarn story

Blacker Swan’s super soft merino fibre was originally sourced from Andrez and Ali Short of Swan Inlet Farm in the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. Following the Short’s retirement the flock of specialist Dohne Merino sheep passed to Mike and Donna Evans at Spring Point Farm, also of the Falkland Islands. The fine white merino wool has been shorn, sorted, graded and shipped to the UK and delivered to the Launceston mill for transforming into luxurious, worsted-spun single-flock yarns.

Who made your knitting yarn?

James McQueen (image provided) is NFC’s Carding Engineer and longest serving member of the team, having joined in 2006. James began his apprenticeship and career in textiles in Scotland and Yorkshire and now oversees all operations in the mill’s production processes including managing the two heritage carding machines (dating from 1946 and 1958). He has vast experience and knowledge of handling and processing everything from rare-breed sheep fleeces to more unusual fibres.
